5 vegan restaurant tips for Kauai
Aktualisiert: 15. Apr. 2020
During our honeymoon on Hawaii we did a bit of island hopping. We visited Oahu, Kauai, Big Island and Maui. As mentioned in our blogpost “Vegan on Oahu” it actually wasn’t as bad as we expected to visit Hawaii as vegans. We were prepared for a lot of self-catering and therefore our accommodation choices were steered by how good a kitchen is equipped. But no worries, even on Kauai there are a lot of vegan places to go out and eat. Here are our 5 favorite spots.

1. Eat Healthy Café Kapaa 4-369 Kuhio Hwy, Kapaa, HI 96746, USA, open from 8am till 9pm daily, closed Sunday’s after 3pm
Without knowing, we booked our condo right across the road from this place. We were so lucky, as this was the BEST place to eat on all of Kauai. It is 100% plant based and their menu has so much delicious varieties. We came here three times in one week… Yes, it was so good! We recommend going there at least for brunch. For lunch they have sandwiches, rolls, bowls, wraps, yum yum yum… And then for dinner they have some more dishes, which are also absolutely fantastic and super creative.
2. Rainbow Living Foods 4-1384 Kuhio Hwy, Kapaa, HI 96746, USA, open from 10am till 5pm
Rainbow Living Foods is in the back court of a block and has a full raw vegan organic menu. They only have 3 tables, so it’s a small place. But the food is great. We had some sushi and a rainbow taco. But checking out their website now, it looks like the changed up the menu. When we were there, the food was super fresh and we felt really good after this raw vegan meal.
3. The Spot Kauai 4-1384 Kuhio Hwy A203, Kapaa, HI 96746, USA, open from 10.30am till 8.30pm
Hello Frozen Yoghurt! This place was always buzzing! You can build your own Fro-Yo and you can have almost anything on their menu in a vegan variation. They’ll just use vegan yoghurt (you can choose from coconut cream and apple banana). Of course we had “The Guilty Vegan” which was chocolaty AND had oreo cookie chunks in it. We also went back there again, as it was close to where we stayed and had an acai bowl and “The Maca Macnut”.
4. Tiki Tacos 4-971 Kuhio Hwy, Kapaa, HI 96746, USA, open from 10am till 8.30 pm
Although Tiki Tacos offers meat and cheese, we loved this place due to its authentic vibe. This place belongs to (what we suppose, cause it looked like it) to a Mexican family. We stopped here, as we were starving and this was kind of the only place open after 8pm on Kauai… So we went and checked out the chalkboard menu. They have quite a few vegetarian options, so we asked the guy taking the orders, if we could get some vegan tacos. He was so open to it and totally knew what to replace and how to make it vegan and was ready to make a special taco just for us. We loved, that he was so friendly and knowledgeable.
Unfortunately we didn’t take pictures of our tacos, as we sat outside and it was practically pitch black. You’ll see what we mean, if you go there :-)

5. The Greenery Cafe 3146 Akahi St, Lihue, HI 96766, USA, open from 10.30am till 4pm, closed on weekends
LOL, so this cafe was an adventure. It’s literally in someone’s back yard. They have a sign out on the road and you park in front of the house. Then you walk along the house to the backyard. There is a little hut with a window in a door to place your orders and some tables in the garden. The food was fantastic and it seems to be a popular place for lunch. It was full, full, full. We had two different vegan wraps with some chips. They also have Buddha bowls, sandwiches and food with meat and dairy.
These were our favorite restaurants. There are many more regular restaurants and quite a lot have vegan options, but don’t get to excited when you check out google maps. Restaurants will say they have vegan options when the have chips and salsa and nothing else. But hey, who doesn’t love some chips and salsa :-) And then there's always shaved ice.

Have a great day! Aloha
